COASTAL MUSEUMS ASSOCIATION

The Coastal Museums Association welcomes you and invites you to visit the many fine museums and other educational sites of Coastal Georgia!

The Coastal Museums Association (CMA) is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit membership organization founded in 1984. The CMA is comprised of 35 museums from Savannah and surrounding coastal counties southward to the cities of Darien and Brunswick. Also included is the Statesboro, Georgia metropolitan area. It is dedicated to serving its members by providing a forum for networking, discussing issues impacting the museum community, exchanging ideas and experiences, and facilitating professional development.

The CMA hosts monthly meetings at 12:30 pm on the first Wednesday of the month at the Whistle Stop Café behind the Savannah History Museum. The meetings address museum related issues and conclude with a program on topics such as: furniture restoration, archival management, hurricane/emergency disaster planning, security and employee safety training, lectures by Kiah Grant scholars, and presentations of member organizations and facilities.

The Kiah Fund was implemented by Virginia Kiah to provide financial assistance to CMA members for seminars and conferences related to their field. It supports members that would like to continue their professional development, but might not otherwise be able to afford such opportunities. A portion of the membership dues revenue is directed into the Kiah Fund to sustain the program. In 2004, all four applicants that applied for assistance were granted some form of stipend. In exchange, the recipients agree to relate the knowledge gained from the conference at one of the monthly meetings.

The CMA also administers a Reciprocal Admissions Program for its members. The optional program provides members and their staff an opportunity to visit participating museums. Since visitors frequently ask front-line personnel what other museum they would recommend, it is a mutually beneficial program that rewards staff and volunteers while familiarizing them with other area museums.
